It was odd to be back at Christ’s Hospital (old school) last week, though hearing the National Anthem near the end of the end-of-term program turn out to be “God Save Our Gracious Queen… [et al]” certainly was a welcome change.
Wales was a welcome change to Jordan in many ways – everyone spoke English, for a start, I felt trusted from the get-go, and it was green – but it already feels odd, not having heard Arabic for a whole week. Travelling seems all about seeming the beauty (and squalor) where you go, but having been away for so long seems to have changed the way I’m looking at the UK: green meadows and the rolling downs. Home is certainly not that bad after all.

I start work in Monday, though definitely am still looking west: a friend from UNC is staying with me at the moment, with another one around next weekend – lots of sight-seeing and tourist shadowing. Still, I’ve been finding lots to do in my free time here, once it all calms down: working with the expat community for Obama, attending these German (and Arabic) language events, and much more… Have to turn all these hopes and dreams into action though.

I take it that “looking west” means that you are meeting UNC friends – or does it? Grandpa
